MEDINA COUNTY REINFORCEMENT PROGRAM——a little extra help
The Medina County Reinforcement Program registered as a charitable organization in 1989. Their mission is to provide intervention and tutor-ing for children ages 3 - 14. It is open to any child in Medina County who is struggling with academic skills, with emphasis on reading and math. Speech therapy is offered as needed. There is also an autism and profound disability class. Classrooms are staffed with a licensed teach-er, teaching assistant and a teen/college student aide. Partnerships with the library and Project Learn have been established. The bookmobile visits the school to allow children to check out books. Project Learns donates children's books for children to make selections to add to their personal libraries.
This year the program begins June 12 and ends July 15. Classes are held Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to noon. The tuition is $300 with an additional cost of $50 for speech therapy. Jane Langol is the director, and the phone number is 330-725-5311.
Because we believe that every child who is struggling academically deserves the opportunity for extra help, each member of our MCRTA board personally donated enough to total $150 of the $300 tuition to provide a scholarship for a child who might otherwise be unable to attend. There will be a collection jar at the registra-tion table for accepting donations to make up the additional $150 to meet the tuition fee for one child. We can all probably remember having a student for whom a little extra help, attention, and class time could have made all the difference.

Karla Robinson from Project:LEARN Organization: Project: LEARN of Medina County Contact: Karla Robinson, Executive Director Phone: 330-723-1314 E-Mail: [email protected] Address: 105 W. Liberty Street Medina, OH 44256 Project: LEARN Offers Training for Volunteer Tutors Change a life! Become a tutor! Project: LEARN offers training for potential volunteer tutors throughout the year. Project: LEARN’s mission is to improve lives and strengthen communities by helping adults improve fundamental skills in reading, problem solving, and the English language. Right now, we are experiencing a high demand for our services and we need more committed tutors who have the ability to connect and communicate with individuals who have not found success in the traditional classroom setting. We hear every day from adults who can no longer get a job without a high school diploma or their GED. We want to help get folks back to work by giving them the skills they need to pass the GED so they have a chance in this competitive job market. We also have a need for tutors who can help the many adults who contact us for assistance with learning English as a second language. We need men and women over the age of 21 with some college education and/or who have had teaching or training experience. Kathy Mesick, supervising tutor at the Medina location, states: “What is most important is that the tutor is willing to serve as a cheerleader for an adult learner. If you have a flexible schedule and a desire to help another adult to change his or her life, I promise every volunteer that they will find the experience very rewarding.” Tutor training session will be offered. We would love to meet with prospective tutors interested in working with any of our populations: GED students, basic literacy students, or students learning English as a Second Language. Training is free. Potential tutors from anywhere in Medina County are welcome—we have centers in Medina, Wadsworth, Brunswick, and Lodi. Please call 330-723-1314 or email [email protected] if you would like to register for a session, or if you have questions. If you can’t make one training session, we can make an appointment to see you at a more convenient time. About Project: LEARN Project: LEARN provides free tutoring for adult learners in literacy, math, English as a second language, and problem-solving skills. For over 32 years, Project: LEARN has worked to strengthen communities and enhance lives by helping adult learners throughout Medina County. The organization also operates three bookstores/tutoring centers, in Medina, Wadsworth and Brunswick, where donated books are sold to support our mission. For more information about Project: LEARN, contact Karla Robinson at 330/723-1314 or [email protected] . Project:LEARN - a wonderful way to volunteer at any time.
