The Medina County Retired Teachers Association is proud to announce the winners of the 2023-2024 Nancy M. Boomhower Active Teacher Grants. Each applicant(s) received $300.00. The Retired Teachers were happy that applicants represented several county school districts, levels of education, and served many students in each district.
The Black River Kindergarten Team (Alicia Toghill, Madison Balog, Kellie Rhem, Katie Kidd, Courtney Klingshirn, and Amelia Perry) submitted “Positive Pirates” an extension of a Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports model which aligns with Ohio’s Social and Emotional Learning Standards.
Black River High School teacher, Christina Howard’s Grant called “Lettuce Grow Together” will be part of a larger project that uses hydroponic technology to teach where food comes from and learn to grow crops.
The Brunswick Teacher Team of Megan Gubanich and Kelly Harrison at Brunswick Middle School are working on a project called “Full Steam Ahead !”. As part of the Journey As A Blue Devil, the teachers will incorporate Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math to create even a catapult to stimulate student thinking and ownership.
Laura Haas of Cloverleaf Elementary plans to utilize a “Sensory Table” with her Special Education Class. Using research based findings, the students will extend their focusing ability and gain more instructional opportunities through use of the equipment the grant will provide.
Wadsworth’s Lincoln Elementary teacher, Joseph Shalala will be incorporating “Reading in Science”. Mr. Shalala will increase cross-curricular activities with the purchase of a series call “Science Comics” to stimulate the students interest and comprehension skills.
Lisa Smith of Wadsworth High School will be “Expanding the Great Gatsby and The American Dream Unit” Through Student Lead Book Clubs. Materials purchased with grant funds will be used for grades 11 and 12.
The Teacher Grant winners are planning to go beyond their usual lessons to provide our students with new and stimulating experiences. The Retired Teachers organization is happy to support their creative and impressive ideas.
Thanks to the members who contribute to make these scholarships possible.

Nancy Boomhower/Teacher Grants February 12, 1938 - October 29, 2013 Gifted educator, past President of Medina County Retired Teachers Association, District X Director, Eastern Area Vice President, and President Elect 2014 ORTA President Nancy's passion was to establish a grant for current teachers and to acquaint them with MCRTA. She remembered those days of spending her own money on classroom materials and projects. Nancy encouraged MCTRA to help 'pay it forward' to some of those teachers who personally provide extra, special opportunities for students in their classrooms that school budgets just won't allow. Her generous initial donation established this fund. MCRTA will continue to raise funds to make this grant available to all current teachers working in Medina County schools. Grant applications are available at Medina County Schools and on-line at this site. Mail completed applications by May 1st of each year.
